Port summary
Kumamoto Port (Kumamoto-ko) is a working ferry and cargo harbour in Nishi-ku that has taken cruise calls since 2013. Ships berth alongside the Yumesaki public wharf, so there is no tender. The catch is distance: the centre is about 12 km away and there is no walkable town at the gate, so sort your transfer first. Cruise-day shuttles usually run to JR Kumamoto Station or the castle area, and from there the compact centre is easy on foot or by tram. Mount Aso is a rewarding but long day trip - about 90 minutes each way - so build in a generous return buffer.

From Yumesaki wharf take the cruise shuttle to JR Kumamoto Station (about 35 minutes), then the JR Hohi line to Aso Station (about 80 minutes, roughly ¥1,130 / EUR 9), where the Sanko bus climbs to the Aso-san / Kusasenri area (about 40 minutes, ~¥650 / EUR 6). Trains and the mountain bus are infrequent, so lock your return train before you go up. The crater rim is closed within ~1 km at alert level 2, so plan on caldera and Kusasenri views rather than the rim.
