Kumamoto Castle is the city's pride: a hilltop fortress begun in 1601 by the warlord Kato Kiyomasa, ranked with Himeji and Nagoya among Japan's three great castles. Its trademark is defensive - steeply curving 'musha-gaeshi' stone walls built to defeat attackers, topped by a commanding black-and-white keep. The 2016 earthquakes did heavy damage and restoration continues, but the rebuilt main keep has reopened with excellent exhibits and a top-floor viewpoint over the city. Allow time to walk the grounds; the outer areas are free and the keep charges a modest entry.
