Midday when access is confirmed open

Nakadake is the beating heart of the Aso caldera - an active crater that vents steam and, at times, holds a milky turquoise lake of superheated water. When volcanic gas levels are safe, a road and short walkways let you stand near the rim for one of Japan's most dramatic close-up volcano views. Access is weather- and activity-dependent and can close at short notice, so always check the day's crater status before setting out. Pair it with the grassland plateau at Kusasenri and the sweeping caldera panoramas on the drive up. From the cruise port it is a long haul - roughly 90 minutes each way - so treat it as a full-day commitment with a firm return plan.
