Morning for calm reflections on the pond
Suizenji Jojuen is a classic strolling garden laid out from 1636 by the Hosokawa lords. A circular path loops a clear, spring-fed pond, past carefully shaped hills and pines that miniaturise the old Tokaido road between Tokyo and Kyoto - including a tidy green cone standing in for Mount Fuji. Pause at the centuries-old Kokindenju-no-ma tea house for matcha over the water. It is small, flat and easy, a calming counterpoint to the castle and the arcades, and a short tram ride from the centre.
