Founded in the 7th century and listed by UNESCO, the medina of Tunis is a dense maze of covered souks, mosques, madrasas and merchants' palaces. Getting a little lost is the point - follow the copper-beaters and perfume sellers toward the Zitouna Mosque at its heart, and haggle gently for leather, ceramics and chechia felt hats.
