Amathus was one of the ancient city-kingdoms of Cyprus, founded in the Iron Age and lived in until Byzantine times, its ruins spread along the shore about 11 km east of Limassol among the modern tourist strip. You can walk the restored Roman agora with its columns, the early Christian basilicas and, up the hill, the acropolis and the temple of Aphrodite. It is smaller and less visited than Kourion but easy to reach on the town side, a good short ancient stop for those who want ruins without the longer drive west.
