Port summary

Derry~Londonderry is one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in Ireland and the only city on the island whose walls survive complete. The walls were built in 1613–1619 for settlers from the City of London, withstood the Siege of 1689 and now carry a free 1.5 km walk with cannon and views over the Bogside. The city's two names reflect its divided history; locals mostly say Derry, and the official name is Londonderry. Foyle Port has three cruise options. Most ships berth at the commercial terminal at Lisahally, on the east bank of the Foyle about 11 km from the centre. Shuttle buses take 15–20 minutes to the city, and the Visit Derry cruise team meets ships on the quay. Small expedition ships (up to about 135 m) can come right up to the city berths at Queen's Quay, a 15-minute walk along the river from the Guildhall. The largest ships anchor in Lough Foyle off Greencastle, County Donegal, and tender ashore; from there it is about 40 minutes by coach to Derry. The city itself makes an easy, rewarding day on foot. Walk the walls, visit the free Guildhall with its stained glass, see the Siege Museum and St Columb's Cathedral, then go down into the Bogside for the Museum of Free Derry, the People's Gallery murals and Free Derry Corner. The Peace Bridge leads across the river to Ebrington Square, a former army barracks. The Tower Museum now hosts the Derry Girls Experience. For a longer day, the Causeway Coast is the big draw: Mussenden Temple on its clifftop at Downhill (about 45 minutes), Dunluce Castle and the Giant's Causeway (about an hour to 1 hour 15 minutes). The train from Derry to Coleraine runs along the shore below Mussenden Temple and is one of Europe's most scenic rail lines. Across the border in Donegal, the stone fort of Grianán of Aileach is about 20 minutes away and Malin Head, Ireland's most northerly point, about 75 minutes. Time ashore is usually generous, but the Causeway is far for a DIY trip on public transport. Take a tour or a pre-booked driver for the coast, and keep a good buffer for the shuttle back to Lisahally.
