Playa Los Frailes

Los Frailes is the showpiece beach of Machalilla National Park: a 3 km crescent of pale sand backed by dry forest and cliffs, with no hotels, bars or buildings in sight. The water is clear but the waves can be strong, and a signed trail over the headland leads to viewpoints and the smaller coves of La Tortuguita and Playa Negra. The beach is free and open daily from 8:00 to 16:00; alcohol, pets and smoking are not allowed, and facilities stop at basic toilets and showers. From Manta it is about 2 hours each way, so the only sensible options on a port day are a ship tour or a pre-booked private driver who will get you back in time.
