Ships berth at one of the two international piers of the Terminal Portuario de Manta, a busy container and tuna port, so you can't walk the quay: a free shuttle bus takes a few minutes to the Terminal de Cruceros, a modern air-conditioned building on the Malecón with Wi-Fi, toilets, craft stalls and tour desks. Step outside and the Museo Centro Cultural Manta is next door, Playa El Murciélago and the Malecón Escénico are a few minutes' walk away and Mall del Pacífico is about 200 m along the seafront. The downtown grid and the free Cancebí folk-life museum are about 1 km inland. Everything else needs wheels: Montecristi, home of the Panama hat and the Ciudad Alfaro civic centre, is 25 minutes by taxi; the Pacoche forest (howler monkeys) and the kitesurf beach at Santa Marianita are 30–45 minutes west and south; the Hojas-Jaboncillo archaeological park is 45 minutes inland. Los Frailes beach and Agua Blanca in Machalilla National Park are about 2 hours each way, so only go on a ship tour or with a pre-booked driver. Manabí province is under a US Level 3 'reconsider travel' advisory and a Canadian avoid-non-essential-travel warning because of gang crime, so keep the day compact, use official yellow taxis or Uber, stay out in daylight and leave rural sites to guided tours.

The two international piers of the Terminal Portuario de Manta, shared with container, tuna and car-carrier traffic. Cruise ships berth alongside either pier; a free shuttle bus runs to the cruise terminal on the Malecón, as walking through the cargo port is not allowed.

From the cruise terminal to the city centre
Compulsory: you can't walk across the working cargo port. The ride takes 3–5 minutes.
📍 Board at the foot of the gangway; buses run to the Terminal de Cruceros on the Malecón.
Museo Centro Cultural Manta is next to the terminal, Playa El Murciélago 5–10 minutes on foot and downtown about 15 minutes. Stick to the busy seafront.
📍 Leave the terminal onto the Malecón; the museum is next door and the beach and Mall del Pacífico are a few minutes west.
Mostly unmetered: agree the fare in US$ before you get in. For Montecristi or Pacoche hire by the hour and fix the return time — roughly $40–60 for a half day.
📍 Official yellow taxis wait on the Malecón outside the cruise terminal.
Uber works in Manta and gives you an upfront fare and a traceable ride; waits can be longer when ships are in.
📍 Request a pickup on the Malecón just outside the terminal.
A pre-booked licensed driver-guide is the safest independent way to reach Montecristi, Pacoche or Machalilla: they wait for you and work to the ship's time.

Cheap but crowded, cash only and Spanish only; not recommended for cruise visitors given the security situation.
