Ciudad Alfaro sits on a hill at the edge of Montecristi and is dedicated to Eloy Alfaro, the town's most famous son, who led Ecuador's Liberal Revolution and served twice as president. His remains rest in the mausoleum here, and the history museum walks you through his life and the upheavals of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The complex's curved roofs were designed to evoke a condor, and it was built to host the Constituent Assembly that drafted Ecuador's 2008 constitution. Look out for the restored steam locomotive, a nod to the Guayaquil–Quito railway Alfaro pushed through, and the crafts market with around 35 stalls selling toquilla hats and tagua carvings. Entry to all areas is free; it's hot and exposed at midday, so go early.

Taxi or Uber from the terminal to Montecristi (25 min); the complex is on the hill above the town centre.
