Plan my port daysShips berth at the Outer Harbor No. 1 Wharf, a working cargo quay about 6.5 km from the city centre. The castle, Okaido arcade and Dogo Onsen are all linked by tram.

Port summary
Matsuyama grew up around its castle, built from 1602 on Katsuyama hill in the middle of the city. The main keep is one of only twelve original castle keeps left in Japan. Dogo Onsen, 2 km east of the castle, is a hot-spring town whose wooden Honkan bathhouse dates from 1894 and inspired scenes in Spirited Away. Cruise ships dock at Matsuyama Port's Outer Harbor No. 1 Wharf (Gaiko district), near the airport and the old port of Mitsuhama. It is a cargo quay, not a town-centre pier. On ship days the city sets up a welcome area with volunteer interpreters, local-product stalls and tourist information, and it staffs help desks at Matsuyama City Station, Okaido, the castle ropeway and Dogo Onsen tram stop. Shuttle arrangements change from call to call, so check the ship's daily programme. Without a shuttle, take a taxi (20–25 minutes to the centre) or walk about 25–30 minutes to Iyotetsu Mitsu Station and ride the orange Takahama Line train to Matsuyama City Station. A good half day is the castle and Okaido: ride the ropeway or chairlift up Katsuyama, tour the keep, then walk down to Bansuiso and the covered arcades. A full day adds Dogo Onsen by tram: soak in the Honkan or the new Asuka-no-Yu annex, browse the Haikara-dori arcade, watch the Botchan clock and walk on to Ishiteji temple. Uchiko, an Edo-era wax-merchant town, is about 50 minutes away by car and works best as a tour. Summers are hot and humid, and June–July is the rainy season. Spring cherry blossom and autumn are the most comfortable times. Carry some cash for small shops, temple offerings and the bathhouse.

The ship berths at Outer Harbor No. 1 Wharf, about 6.5 km west of the centre; use the shuttle if your call has one, otherwise walk 25–30 minutes to Iyotetsu Mitsu Station and take the Takahama Line to Matsuyama City Station (about 15 minutes, trains every 15 minutes, about ¥400). From there the tram (¥230 a ride, or a ¥700 1-day pass) goes to Okaido for the castle ropeway (¥520 return, castle keep ¥520, 9:00–17:00, last entry 16:30) and on to Dogo Onsen in about 20 minutes. Ishiteji is a 15–20 minute walk from the Dogo Onsen tram stop and is free to enter (treasure house ¥200).

Take a taxi from the berth to JR Matsuyama Station (about 20–25 minutes, ¥2,500–3,500 per car), then the JR limited express to Uchiko (about 25 minutes, ¥1,610 unreserved, roughly hourly). Walk 10 minutes past the Uchiko-za (closed for preservation repair until about spring 2029; only the dressing rooms are open, ¥200) and on to the Yokaichi-Gokoku street, where the Kamihaga Residence and wax museum cost ¥500 (9:00–16:30). Ozu is one more stop down the line, but adding it means another hourly train and about 2 extra hours, so this DIY covers Uchiko only.
