Messina cruise terminal sits a 10–15 minute walk from Messina Centrale rail station along Via Vittorio Emanuele II. Trenitalia regional trains Messina Centrale → Taormina-Giardini run roughly hourly, €4.60 one-way / ~€10 return, 45–60 min. The station is in the valley below Taormina town — the local Interbus shuttle (€2 one-way, every 30 min) climbs the switchbacks to Taormina centre in 15 min, or take a taxi for ~€20. Ancient Greek Theatre admission is €14 (€16 during the Jago exhibition Sep 2025–May 2026), tickets pre-bookable on the official Aditus Culture portal.

Public transit DIY from Messina to Etna is brutal — there is no direct bus, you must train to Catania (1h15 fast, 1h45 regional) then catch the once-daily AST bus from Piazza Papa Giovanni XXIII at 08:15 to Rifugio Sapienza, returning 16:30. A 7:00–8:00 cruise arrival rarely makes the bus. The realistic DIY is a pre-booked small-group day tour from a Messina-based operator (Sicily Active, Excursions Sicily, Go-Etna) — pickup at the cruise pier, 8 hours, €70–90pp including transport, guided crater walk and lunch. The Sapienza cable car (Funivia dell'Etna) up to 2,500 m is €50 return and walk-up unless you want the 4x4-plus-guide combo to ~2,900 m (€88, pre-book).
