Al Alam ("the flag") is the Sultan's ceremonial palace in Old Muscat, used for state visits and royal receptions. The 1972 cantilevered facade in turquoise and gold is the iconic Muscat photo, framed by the twin Portuguese sea forts of Mirani and Jalali on the cliffs above. Visitors can walk the entrance plaza but the building itself is closed.
