Mid-morning to early afternoon for the light on the cliffs.
Mirani and Jalali are the twin Portuguese sea forts (1580s) on the cliffs flanking the entrance to Old Muscat harbour. Both are still active military bases and not open to non-Omanis, but the cliff setting framing the palace is the iconic Muscat shot — climb to the small lookout opposite for the best angle.
