Most beaches have no lifeguards: watch for rip currents, especially at Tamarindo, and never swim near the Tamarindo estuary mouth, where crocodiles live. Use licensed red taxis, agree the fare first and keep valuables with you.

Port summary

Playa Flamingo sits on a headland in Guanacaste, Costa Rica's dry northwest, between Potrero Bay and the open Pacific. It is a small, upscale resort rather than a town: hotels, villas and a few shopping plazas on the hill, the long pale beach once called Playa Blanca on the ocean side, and Marina Flamingo on the bay side. The marina reopened after a long closure and now has a small village with restaurants, shops and the departure docks for catamarans, sportfishing and dive boats. Cruise calls are few and almost all by small ships, such as Windstar and, from 2028, Four Seasons Yachts, mainly from December to March. There is no cruise pier: ships anchor offshore and tender guests in, usually to the marina. From there you can walk to Playa Flamingo in about 10 minutes, but the other sights need a taxi. Playa Potrero and the quiet coves of Penca and Pan de Azúcar are 5–10 minutes north. Brasilito, a real Tico village, and Playa Conchal, famous for its crushed-shell sand, are 10–15 minutes south. Las Catalinas, a car-free beach town, is about 20 minutes away. Tamarindo, the busy surf town with the mangrove estuary of Las Baulas National Park, is 35–45 minutes away. The classic port day is a catamaran sail with snorkelling, which leaves from the marina and fits neatly into a call. Public buses exist but are infrequent, and there is no Uber here, so plan on taxis or a booked tour. December to April is the dry season: hot, sunny and windy.
