Filitosa Prehistoric Site

Filitosa, in an olive grove above the Taravo valley, is Corsica's most famous prehistoric site. Its menhir statues, some carved with faces, swords and daggers, date from around 1500 BC and stand beside the ruins of a fortified Bronze Age settlement. The signposted path takes about an hour and a half and passes the central monument, the row of five statue-menhirs by an ancient olive tree and the Filitosa V statue, the best-armed of them all. A small museum by the entrance explains the finds. The site opens daily from April to early November, from 09:00 until an hour before sunset. There is little shade, so bring water and a hat in summer. There is no public transport: take a taxi or hire car (about 30 minutes each way) and agree a pick-up time if the driver is not waiting.
