🕐 Best time to visit
Late morning when the crocs sun themselves.
The Río Grande de Tárcoles passes under Highway 34 between Puntarenas and Carara. From the pavement on the south side of the bridge you can lean over and watch a colony of 30+ American crocodiles, several measuring 4 metres, sunning on the muddy banks below. A roadside cafeteria has the safer view from the upstairs balcony.
Getting there from the port
Most cruisers stop on a Carara or Manuel Antonio tour bus; the bridge is on Highway 34, the Costanera Sur.
