The Paseo de los Turistas seafront is 5 minutes from the pier; the Catedral, Mercado Municipal and Parque Marino del Pacífico are all walkable; Tortuga Island boats leave from the Muelle right next to the cruise berth. From the cruise terminal to the city centre
The pier is in town — most cruisers walk off and explore the peninsula on foot.
📍 Walk straight off the pier onto Calle 35; the Paseo de los Turistas seafront is 5 minutes south.
Red taxis are the only authorised airport-to-pier service. Agree the fare or use the meter.
📍 Red official taxis at the pier gate and along the Paseo; insist on the meter (María) or agree fare before riding.
Best option for far-flung excursions — Manuel Antonio, Poás Volcano, San José coffee tours.
📍 Cruise-line and tour-operator buses wait at the pier gate.
Uber works in Puntarenas but is unofficial — drivers can't access the cruise pier directly. Cheaper than taxis once you walk away from the gate.
📍 Order via the Uber app once you walk a block away from the pier gate; drivers are blocked from picking up at the gate itself.
Cheap but slow and aimed at locals — not recommended for tight cruise schedules.
📍 Public buses leave from the bus station on Calle 2, three blocks from the pier; routes to Caldera, Esparza and San José.
Rare for cruise day — book ahead if you want to drive yourself to Manuel Antonio or the Central Valley.
📍 Rental offices in Puntarenas town and at Juan Santamaría airport (110 km away).
