Poás has the second-largest active crater in the world — a 1.5 km wide caldera with a turquoise sulphur lake at the bottom. A short paved path from the visitor centre at 2,700 m leads to the lookout. Activity flares occasionally close the crater rim, but on clear mornings the view is spectacular.
