Palaiokastro, the 'Old Navarino' castle, crowns the rocky headland above Voidokilia Beach and the Gialova Lagoon. Built by the Franks in the 13th century on the site of ancient Pylos, its crumbling walls reward a steep climb with one of the finest panoramas in the Peloponnese — the whole sweep of Navarino Bay and Sphacteria. The path is rough and unshaded, so good footwear, water and time are essential.
