Karnak grew over 1,500 years as the religious centre of ancient Thebes — pharaoh after pharaoh added pylons, halls and obelisks. The Great Hypostyle Hall (Seti I and Ramesses II, 13th c. BC) has 134 stone columns 23 m tall, originally roofed in stone. Allow 2-3 hours; the early-morning slot before tour buses is the only way to get clear photos.
