The cruise terminal sits on Avenida da França at the southern tip of the working port, right in the Cidade Baixa. Walk out of the gate and the Mercado Modelo is about 400 m away; the Elevador Lacerda beside it lifts you 72 m to the Cidade Alta, where Pelourinho begins. That makes Salvador a genuinely DIY port for the historic centre. Everything beyond it, including Barra, Rio Vermelho and Bonfim, needs a taxi or an Uber. Street crime is a real consideration: the historic centre is patrolled and busy in cruise hours, but the streets between the terminal and the Comércio back blocks are quiet and not a place to wander with a camera out.

The cruise berth at the southern end of the Porto de Salvador, directly in front of the passenger terminal on Avenida da França. Ships lie alongside; there is no tendering. The terminal gate opens onto Comércio, with the Mercado Modelo about 400 m south.

From the cruise terminal to the city centre
The Mercado Modelo is about 400 m from the gate and the Elevador Lacerda is beside it. Walking is the best way to reach the historic centre, but stay on the busy waterfront route rather than cutting through the back streets of Comércio.
📍 Turn left out of the terminal gate onto Avenida da França and follow the waterfront to Praça Cairu.
Metered white taxis. Insist the meter runs, or agree a flat price before you get in. Most take cards but ask first.

Uber and 99 both work well in Salvador and are usually cheaper than a taxi. Coverage is reliable in the centre, Barra and Rio Vermelho.

Some lines run a short bus from the ship to the terminal building when the berth is far along the quay. It is not always provided and is not needed to reach town.

City buses are cheap and frequent but have no English signage and are not built for visitors with bags. A taxi or Uber is the better call for a short port day.

The São Joaquim to Bom Despacho ferry crosses to Itaparica in about 50 minutes. Foot passengers pay R$7.20 on weekdays and R$9.50 at weekends. Queues can be long, so this only works on a long call.
📍 Terminal Marítimo de São Joaquim, about 3 km north of the cruise terminal; take a taxi or Uber to get there.
Salvador's metro is modern and clean but no station is near the cruise terminal or Pelourinho, so it is mainly useful for the airport run rather than a port day.
