The Parque Humedal Río Maipo protects the estuary where Chile's central river meets the Pacific. Trails and boardwalks lead through reeds, lagoons and dunes to bird hides, and more than 200 species have been recorded, including black-necked swans, Chilean flamingos and migrating waders. Entry is free; the park suggests booking a visit slot through its website. Bring binoculars, a windproof jacket and sun protection.
