Port summary

Santander lines the north shore of a wide, sheltered bay and is one of the easiest port days on Spain's Atlantic coast. Since 2023 the city-centre Estación Marítima has been reserved for cruise ships (ferries moved to a new terminal on the Maliaño quays), so most ships berth right on the waterfront and you simply walk off. Turn left along the bay and within five minutes you are at the Pereda Gardens and the floating, ceramic-clad Centro Botín art centre by Renzo Piano. Two blocks inland are the cathedral, with its Gothic cloister and the Romanesque crypt church of El Cristo, and the busy Mercado de la Esperanza food market. Much of the old centre burned in 1941, so the city feels Belle Époque and 20th-century rather than medieval. Follow the Paseo de Pereda and the seafront east past Puertochico and the Maritime Museum (about 30–40 minutes on foot), or hop on a city bus, to reach the Magdalena peninsula, with its royal summer palace, cliff paths and sea-lion pools, and then the grand beaches and casino of El Sardinero. Boats from the Embarcadero next to the Centro Botín cross the bay to the dune beach at Somo. Beyond the city, the classic trip is west to Santillana del Mar, a perfectly preserved stone village, and the Altamira museum with its replica of the Ice Age painted cave (about 30 km, 35 minutes); Comillas with Gaudí's El Capricho is a further 20 km. Cabárceno Nature Park, a drive-through wildlife park in a former mine, is 17 km south. Note that Altamira and the Cabo Mayor art centre close on Mondays, and the Centro Botín is shut on most Mondays outside high summer. Weather on this coast changes fast: bring a rain layer even on a sunny morning.
