Plan my port days
DIY 5/10

Ships dock inside a working cargo port with a crafts market in the terminal. There is nothing to walk to: Puerto Barrios is a 15-minute taxi ride, and Livingston and the Río Dulce are reached by boat.

🚢 Docked port5 km / 3.1 mi to city centre
Boats to Livingston depend on the weather and stop in the late afternoon, and Izabal has a higher crime rate: use vetted terminal taxis and operators, and be back early.

Port summary

Cruise ships dock at Berth 1 of the Empresa Portuaria Nacional (EMPORNAC), a busy container and banana port on Amatique Bay. A short walk along the quay brings you to the cruise terminal, a large warehouse-style hall with a crafts market, food stands, live marimba music, an ATM and an INGUAT tourist desk. Only a handful of ships call each season, mostly between October and April. The port sits on the edge of the small town of Santo Tomás, and there is nothing worth walking to. The twin town of Puerto Barrios is 5 km away (about 15 minutes by taxi): it has the historic wooden Hotel del Norte on the seafront, a lively municipal market and the Muelle Municipal, where public speedboats leave for Livingston. Las Escobas, a rainforest trail with waterfall pools on Cerro San Gil, is only 15 minutes from the port. Livingston is the highlight for independent travellers: a Garifuna town at the mouth of the Río Dulce that can only be reached by boat (about 35 minutes from Puerto Barrios, or by tour boat from the port). From there, boats run up the spectacular Río Dulce gorge. The Castillo de San Felipe and the Maya site of Quiriguá are each around 1.5 hours away by road, so they only work as a full day with a reliable driver or a tour. Use the vetted taxis and operators at the terminal, agree prices in advance, and keep the day simple: Izabal has a higher crime rate than the rest of Guatemala's tourist areas, and boats stop running in the late afternoon. Plan to be back at the terminal at least 60–90 minutes before all aboard.
