Perched on Mount Kuno, this richly painted vermilion shrine was the first resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder of the shogunate, before his reburial at Nikko. The ornate Romon gate, drum tower and a small museum sit amid sea views, reached by ropeway or 1,159 stone steps.
