Port summary
Siglufjörður sits at the head of a narrow fjord on the Troll Peninsula (Tröllaskagi), about 45 km south of the Arctic Circle. In the 1940s and 1950s it was the herring capital of the North Atlantic; today it is a quiet town of about 1,200 people with a restored waterfront. Small cruise ships berth at Bæjarbryggja, the town quay, about 300 m from the square. Larger ships anchor in the fjord and tender in. The town is made for walking. The Herring Era Museum, Iceland's largest maritime museum, fills three old herring buildings on the waterfront about 7 minutes south of the quay (kr 2,400; open 10:00–17:00 in June–August and 13:00–17:00 in May and September). The Folk Music Centre, the 1932 church, the harbour cafés, Fríða's chocolate café and the Segull 67 brewery are all within 10 minutes. For a view, hike up to the Hvanneyrarskál bowl above the avalanche barriers at the north end of town (about 5 km return, 150 m climb). Beyond town you depend on fixed times. Strætó bus 78 runs through the Héðinsfjörður tunnels to Ólafsfjörður (17 min), Dalvík (37 min) and Akureyri (about 85 min), but only three times on weekdays and once on Sundays. There is no taxi rank: the few taxis are based in Ólafsfjörður and must be booked ahead. Hofsós, with its hillside pool, is 55 minutes west on Road 76 and has no bus. Local operator Sóti Summits runs walks, hikes, e-bike and boat trips from its office on the square. Pack waterproofs in every season.
