In 1777 Morocco was the first country to recognise American independence; in 1821 the Sultan gave this riad to the United States to house its consulate. Today it's a small museum of Tangier's mid-century expat scene — Paul Bowles' typewriter, jazz photographs, Moroccan painters and a quiet courtyard. Free entry; closed Saturdays and Sundays.

Getting there from the port

Walk uphill from the gate via Rue d'Amérique; the Legation is in the medina at #8.
