The Ano Poli is the old upper quarter that escaped the 1917 fire, a maze of steep lanes, timber-balconied houses and tiny Byzantine chapels. The city walls climb to the Eptapyrgio fortress and the Trigonion Tower, where the whole city and gulf open out below - easiest as a taxi up and a wander down.
