This great basilica honours Saint Demetrius, patron of Thessaloniki, martyred in the Roman baths that still lie beneath it. Rebuilt after the 1917 fire, it preserves rare 7th-century mosaics by the altar and a crypt telling the story of his death; modest dress is expected.
