Tilbury Fort is England's finest surviving example of 17th-century military engineering, its arrowhead bastions and moats built to guard the sea approach to London. Run by English Heritage, it is a quiet, atmospheric stop with gunpowder magazines, the Water Gate and Thames views - and, right beside it, the riverside where the Empire Windrush landed in 1948.
