Port summary

Cruise calls are handled by Tokushima Komatsushima Port, run by Tokushima Prefecture. Larger ships such as Diamond Princess and Norwegian Jade berth at Akaishi Wharf in Komatsushima, a cargo quay with nothing to see nearby; mid-size ships often use neighbouring Kanaiso Wharf. On ship days a free shuttle bus runs from the quay to JR Minami-Komatsushima Station (about 10–15 minutes), and taxis are arranged at the berth. Small ships, such as Oceania's Regatta and Nautica, sometimes use Okinosu Wharf on the Tokushima side, about 5 km from Tokushima Station. From Minami-Komatsushima, local JR Mugi Line trains reach Tokushima Station in about 15–20 minutes. They run roughly once or twice an hour, so note the return times before you set off. Central Tokushima is compact and flat: the castle ruins in Tokushima Chuo Park are right behind the station, and a 10-minute walk along the Shinmachi River brings you to the Awa Odori Kaikan. There you can watch a 40-minute Awa Odori dance show and ride the ropeway up Mt Bizan for views over the city and the Kii Channel. Tokushima ramen, with a dark pork-and-soy broth, sweet simmered pork and a raw egg on top, is the local lunch. The Hyotan-jima boat circles the river island at the heart of the city in 30 minutes. Indigo dyeing (aizome) is the region's traditional craft; you can try it yourself at Ai-no-Yakata in Aizumi, about 40 minutes by bus from the station. Naruto, about an hour north of Tokushima Station by bus, has the famous whirlpools under the Onaruto Bridge, seen from sightseeing boats or from the glass-floored Uzu-no-Michi walkway, plus the vast Otsuka Museum of Art. The whirlpools are strongest around peak tidal flow, so check the daily tide table. Ryozenji, Temple 1 of the Shikoku 88-temple pilgrimage, is about 25 minutes from Tokushima by train. From the berth, allow at least two hours each way for Naruto; on a short call, the ship's tour is the safer choice.
