Kehi Jingu is the chief shrine of the old Echizen province and is said to date back to the 8th century. Its great vermilion wooden torii - counted among Japan's three finest - rises about 11 metres over the approach, and the tree-shaded grounds with their sacred spring make a calm, atmospheric first stop a short ride from the pier.
