Late morning to afternoon for open shops. Combine with Chinatown for a half-day loop.

Motomachi has been Yokohama's upscale shopping street since the city opened to foreign trade in 1859. The tree-lined avenue runs 600 metres parallel to the waterfront, with a mix of Japanese fashion brands, Western-style bakeries, jewellers and homeware shops. The Motomachi brand itself is a badge of quality locally. Side streets hide small cafes and vintage stores. The pace is calm compared to the bustle of nearby Chinatown. It connects naturally with a stroll through the Yamate Bluff area above, where Western-style mansions from the treaty-port era survive as museums.

Getting there from the port

6-minute walk south from Osanbashi Pier. Minatomirai Line to Motomachi-Chukagai Station (exit 5 for Motomachi side).
