Alanya's castle is one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in the Mediterranean, a ring of Seljuk walls more than six kilometres long wrapped around the whole headland. Inside are the inner citadel (Ic Kale), a Byzantine church, cisterns, an old village of houses and the Suleymaniye Mosque, and the views over the harbour on one side and Cleopatra Beach on the other are extraordinary. The climb is steep and hot, so ride the cable car or a taxi up and wander down; allow a couple of hours to do it justice.
Getting there from the port
Cable car from Cleopatra Beach, or a taxi up the headland; walking is a steep climb.
