Port summary

Alghero has no cruise berth deep enough for ocean ships, so every cruise call anchors in the bay in front of the sea walls. Tenders land at Banchina Dogana, the old customs quay inside the harbour, directly below the Bastioni. From the landing you walk through Porta a Mare into the Old Town in two or three minutes, so no shuttle is needed. The whole walled town is small and flat: the Cathedral of Santa Maria, San Francesco with its cloister, the tiled dome of San Michele, Torre di Porta Terra and the coral shops of Via Carlo Alberto are all within ten minutes of each other. The sea-wall promenade (Bastioni Marco Polo and Cristoforo Colombo) runs along the south and west side and is the best free walk in town. The Lido di San Giovanni beach starts about 20 minutes' walk north along the seafront. The big day trip is Neptune's Grotto at Capo Caccia. Boats from Navisarda and Frecce delle Grotte leave from the harbour next to the tender landing, roughly hourly from April to October, and take about 45 minutes each way. The grotto ticket (€18 in 2026) is separate from the boat fare and you must book a time slot. Boats stop running when the sea is rough, often on mistral days. The land route is ARST bus 9321 or a taxi to Capo Caccia and then 654 steps down the Escala del Cabirol. Other easy trips: Nuraghe di Palmavera (Bronze Age village, 10 km west), the Anghelu Ruju necropolis and the Sella & Mosca winery (10 km north), and the beaches and nature reserve of Porto Conte. Bosa and La Pelosa at Stintino are about an hour each way by road and are best by taxi, tour or rental car. Allow extra time for the tender queue on the way back.
