Djamaa El Djazaïr, the Great Mosque of Algiers, opened in 2024 on the bay east of the city centre. Its prayer hall holds 120,000 worshippers, making it the largest mosque in Africa and the third largest in the world, and its 265 m minaret is the tallest anywhere. Visitors can see the vast esplanade, the courtyard and, outside prayer times, parts of the interior, as well as a museum of Islamic art and history and a viewing platform near the top of the minaret. Dress code is strict: arms and legs covered for everyone and a headscarf for women. Allow at least 90 minutes including the taxi, and check opening times locally because access changes around prayers and religious holidays.
