Port summary
Cruise ships berth in the Port of Algiers at or next to the Gare Maritime, the passenger terminal used by the ferries to Marseille and Spain. It sits directly below Boulevard Che Guevara, the long arcaded seafront boulevard, so the lower Casbah, Place des Martyrs and Square Port Saïd are only 10–20 minutes' walk up the ramps and stairs. The Grande Poste and Rue Didouche Mourad are about 1.5 km away. The big question in Algiers is not transport but permission. Algeria requires a visa for most nationalities. Cruise lines usually arrange a collective visa on board, and several (Viking, for example) only allow guests ashore on the ship's own excursions, often with a police escort for the coaches. Other lines let visa holders walk out on their own. Read your cruise line's port instructions carefully and do not try to leave the port without the right paperwork. If you can explore independently, the Casbah is the reason to come: a UNESCO-listed Ottoman medina of whitewashed houses and steep stairways, with the Ketchaoua Mosque, Dar Mustapha Pacha and the Palais des Raïs at its lower edge. A local guide is strongly recommended in the upper Casbah, where lanes are confusing and partly in ruins. From Place des Martyrs, metro line 1 runs past the Grande Poste to the Jardin d'Essai botanical garden, where a cable car climbs to the Maqam Echahid martyrs' memorial and the National Museum of Fine Arts sits next door. Notre-Dame d'Afrique, the basilica with the best view of the bay, is a short taxi ride or a cable car ride from Bologhine. Further afield, the vast Djamaa El Djazaïr (Great Mosque of Algiers) with its 265 m minaret is 20–30 minutes east by taxi, and the Roman ruins of Tipasa on the coast are 1h15–1h30 west. Both are typical ship excursions. Bring euros to exchange on board or at an official bureau: the dinar is a closed currency, cards are rarely accepted and foreign cards often fail in ATMs. English is not widely spoken; French and Arabic are.
