That makes the town itself a relaxed half day on foot - the Nebuta floats, the Nokkedon seafood market and the bay views. For a full day, the great sights of Tohoku are within reach: Hirosaki, with one of Japan's few original castle keeps and its cherry-blossom park, is about 45-50 minutes by JR; the mossy waterfalls of the Oirase Gorge and the caldera Lake Towada are a 90-120 minute bus or coach ride into the mountains; the Hakkoda ropeway and the 5,000-year-old Jomon village of Sannai-Maruyama, beside the Aomori Museum of Art, are closer. Aomori is snowbound in winter but a fine, green cruise call from late spring to autumn.

From the cruise terminal to the city centre
Aomori's pier is right in the city: the Nebuta Museum WA RASSE and A-Factory are beside the berth, ASPAM and JR Aomori Station a flat 10-15 minute walk. The best way to see the town.
