That makes the town itself a relaxed half day on foot - the Nebuta floats, the Nokkedon seafood market and the bay views. For a full day, the great sights of Tohoku are within reach: Hirosaki, with one of Japan's few original castle keeps and its cherry-blossom park, is about 45-50 minutes by JR; the mossy waterfalls of the Oirase Gorge and the caldera Lake Towada are a 90-120 minute bus or coach ride into the mountains; the Hakkoda ropeway and the 5,000-year-old Jomon village of Sannai-Maruyama, beside the Aomori Museum of Art, are closer. Aomori is snowbound in winter but a fine, green cruise call from late spring to autumn.

Very doable independently. Walk 10-15 minutes from the Shin-Chuo Pier to JR Aomori Station, then the Ou Line to Hirosaki (about 45-50 minutes, ¥680, IC cards fine, roughly every 30 minutes). From Hirosaki Station the ¥100-200 Dotemachi loop bus or a 25-minute walk reaches the castle park; the keep and park are ¥320 and the Fujita garden a further ¥320. Everything in Hirosaki is then walkable.

The best-value DIY day and almost all walking or a short bus. Nebuta Warasse (¥620) is a two-minute walk from the pier. For Sannai-Maruyama, take the Nebutan-go city loop bus (~¥300) or a taxi about 25 minutes; the Jomon site is ¥410 with free English guided tours, and the Aomori Museum of Art (¥510) is next door. The ASPAM tower observation deck (¥400) is back by the pier for bay views.
