Late April for the celebrated cherry blossom; fine year-round
Hirosaki Castle is one of only a dozen Japanese castles to keep its original wooden keep, a modest three-storey tower dating from 1611 at the heart of a large moated park. The park is one of Japan's most famous cherry-blossom sites, drowning in pink each late April, but the moats, turrets, gates and the Tsugaru-clan history reward a visit in any season. The old castle town around it preserves a samurai street and, unusually, a cluster of Taisho-era Western-style churches and buildings.
