Morning, before the midday heat
Tambo Colorado was an Inca administrative centre and waystation on the road linking the coast with the highlands. Its adobe plazas, storehouses and trapezoidal niches survive remarkably well in the dry climate, and traces of the red, yellow and white paint that gave it its name are still visible. The site is quiet, with little shade, so bring water and a hat. It's a long drive inland, so it suits a full day with a guide.
Getting there from the port
Pre-booked tour or hired driver from the port, about 1h45 each way inland via Pisco.
