The Atomic Bomb Dome is the skeletal shell of the former Industrial Promotion Hall, left almost directly beneath the point where the first atomic bomb detonated on 6 August 1945. Because the blast came from almost straight above, the walls and the dome's steel frame stayed standing while everything around was flattened. Preserved deliberately as a ruin, it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most powerful single image of the city's destruction and its call for peace.
