Hiroshima Castle, nicknamed the Carp Castle, was first built in the 1590s on the delta plains, an unusual flatland fortress rather than a hilltop one. The original wooden keep was destroyed by the atomic bomb in 1945 and rebuilt in 1958 in concrete, now housing a museum of samurai-era Hiroshima with armour, swords and city history. Set in a broad moated park with reconstructed gates and a shrine, it is an easy, green counterpoint to the Peace Park a short walk to the south.
