Early morning, before the heat; the hill trail is slippery after rain
Maeva was the seat of Huahine's eight chiefly families, and the marae they built here form one of the largest archaeological complexes in French Polynesia. Several restored temple platforms line the shore of Lake Fauna Nui by the Fare Pote'e; more, plus remains of fortifications from the 1840s war against the French, are scattered up Matairea Hill. The hill path is steep, rooty and slippery after rain, and takes about an hour up and back. The area is infested with little fire ants, whose sting is painful, so wear closed shoes and long trousers and don't sit on the stones. A local guide brings the site to life if you'd rather not go alone.
Getting there from the port
Drive the east-coast road north from Faie to Maeva; park by the Fare Pote'e
