Port summary

Ilha Grande lies about 12 km off the coast of Angra dos Reis, between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Most of the island is protected Atlantic rainforest, and together with Paraty it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2019. There are no roads or private cars: you get around on foot or by boat. Ships anchor in the bay and tender passengers to the tourist pier (Cais de Turismo) in Vila do Abraão, the island's main village, with its white church, beach bars, restaurants and tour agencies. From the pier, an easy coastal trail leads in 20 minutes to Praia Preta and the ruins of the Lazareto, a former quarantine station and later prison, then inland to the old aqueduct and the Poção river pool. Keen walkers can carry on to the Feiticeira waterfall (about 1h15 each way). The island's star beach, Lopes Mendes, is on the ocean side: shared boats drop you at Praia do Pouso, from where a 20–25 minute trail crosses to the long white beach. The other classic is a schooner or speedboat trip to the snorkelling spot of Lagoa Azul. Boat trips usually leave between 09:30 and 11:30 and return mid-afternoon, so check the return time against all-aboard. Bring swimwear, sun cream, insect repellent and some cash in reais.
