The Kushiro Marsh Observatory (Kushiro-shi Shitsugen Tenbodai) sits on a low ridge at the southwestern edge of the Kushiro Wetland, about 30 minutes from the port. Its distinctive building, shaped like the tussocks of sedge that dot the marsh, houses displays on the wetland's wildlife, a café and a shop, with a rooftop deck looking north over the reed plain towards the distant Akan volcanoes. The real highlight is the 2.5 km boardwalk loop that drops into the alder woods to a satellite observatory with a wider view of the marsh; allow about an hour and wear shoes with grip, as the far section has steps and a suspension bridge. Red-crowned cranes, Ezo deer and white-tailed eagles are sometimes seen, though sightings are never guaranteed. The first floor is free; the exhibits and rooftop cost ¥470. Open 8:30–18:00 from May to October (9:00–17:00 in winter). In fog, the view can vanish completely, so check conditions before paying for a taxi.
Getting there from the port
Taxi about 30 minutes from the downtown berth, or Akan Bus from JR Kushiro Station (about 40 minutes, ¥690)
