Port summary
Kushiro has two cruise berths. Smaller ships tie up at the Earthquake-Resistant Cruise Terminal on the river mouth, a 5–10 minute walk from Fisherman's Wharf MOO, Nusamai Bridge and the red-brick Minato Bunkan; larger ships (Princess, Holland America, Costa) use the industrial West Port No. 4 Wharf and ride a free city shuttle to MOO. From the riverside it is a 15-minute walk to JR Kushiro Station and the Washo Market, where you build your own katte-don seafood bowl. The big draw is nature: the Kushiro Marsh Observatory and its boardwalk sit on the edge of Japan's largest wetland about 30 minutes away, the Hosooka Observatory gives the classic view over the meandering river, and red-crowned cranes live year-round at the crane park near the airport. Lake Akan, with its Ainu village and marimo cruise, and the deep-blue caldera of Lake Mashu are 1.5–2 hours each way by road: doable on a long call with a private taxi or the Akan Bus Pirika tour, but tight on a 7- or 8-hour visit. Summer is cool and often foggy; September and October bring the clearest skies.

Large ships berth at West Port No. 4 Wharf and ride the free city shuttle to Fisherman's Wharf MOO (15–20 minutes); smaller ships walk 8 minutes from the downtown terminal. There is no bus link between the two sights and no taxi rank at either, so hire a taxi by the hour from MOO (Kushiro companies charge about ¥8,040 per hour, wait time included; a car seats 4): about 40 minutes to the crane park (¥480 entry), 25 minutes on to the Kushiro Marsh Observatory (¥470, 2.5 km boardwalk) and 30 minutes back to MOO. If you only want the marsh, Akan Bus runs from JR Kushiro Station to the observatory in about 40 minutes for ¥690.
