Kolossi Castle is a handsome three-storey Crusader keep standing among fields and vineyards 11 km west of Limassol, built in its current form in the 15th century as the stronghold of the Knights of St John. From its battlements the Knights ran the sugar and wine estates around it, and it gave its name to Commandaria, the sweet dessert wine claimed as the world's oldest named wine. You can climb through its vaulted rooms to the roof; it makes a quick, atmospheric stop on the way to or from Kourion.
