Mycenae was the most powerful kingdom of Bronze Age Greece and, in legend, the seat of Agamemnon. You enter the hilltop citadel through the Lion Gate (around 1250 BC), pass Grave Circle A where Schliemann found the gold 'Mask of Agamemnon', and climb to the palace remains with views over the Argive plain. The ticket includes the site museum and the Treasury of Atreus, a vast beehive tomb a few hundred metres down the road, whose corbelled dome was the largest in the world for over a thousand years. The paths are uneven and steep in places, with little shade. Allow at least two hours on site, and arrive at opening time to stay ahead of the coach tours.
