Port summary
Nafplion sits on a small peninsula at the head of the Argolic Gulf in the eastern Peloponnese. The harbour is too shallow for cruise ships (about 6 m), so ships anchor in the bay and run tenders to the main harbour quay on Akti Miaouli. You step ashore at the edge of the old town: Syntagma Square is about five minutes' walk, and the little island fortress of Bourtzi is right in front of you in the harbour. Only very small ships ever come alongside. The old town is flat, compact and made for wandering: marble-paved Syntagma Square with the Archaeological Museum, Staikopoulou Street with its tavernas, the church of Agios Spyridon where Greece's first governor Kapodistrias was assassinated, the Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation museum and the small Komboloi Museum. Boats to Bourtzi leave from the start of the harbour every 30 minutes or so in summer. Above the town, Palamidi fortress is the big effort of the day. Climb the famous 999 steps (in reality about 860) from Polyzoidou Street in 30–45 minutes, or take a taxi or the tourist train up the back road. Go early: there is no shade on the steps and entry is €20. For a gentler outing, follow the Arvanitia promenade around the Akronafplia headland to Arvanitia beach, and continue on the coastal path to the long sandy beach at Karathona (about 3 km). The classic big trips are Mycenae, the Bronze Age citadel of Agamemnon with the Lion Gate (about 30 minutes by road), and the ancient theatre of Epidaurus with its famous acoustics (about 40 minutes). Both cost €20 to enter. KTEL buses from the station on Syngrou Street are cheap (€3.50) but infrequent, so most independent visitors share a taxi with an agreed return time. Tiryns, a UNESCO-listed Mycenaean citadel, is only 10 minutes away and rarely crowded. Allow at least 3 hours for either Mycenae or Epidaurus including transfers, and remember tender queues at the end of the day.
